Week 99

0.2lb loss!!!

What the...

I was awake early this morning, so long before Maggie and I had our weigh-in I wrote a piece containing all my excuses for putting on more weight this week - so much for lines in the sand, the problems of out of control cravings following a fortnight of eating fattier, saltier and sugarier foods etc.

I was completely and utterly expecting to have put on weight this week; the only question was going to be how much.

And yet, here I am, 0.2 lbs lighter than last week. I do not understand.

There are 3 possibilities, one of which involves benign deities, so perhaps there are only 2.

The first is that my metabolism has speeded up with all the extra food, so I am in fact burning up more than usual. I know the metabolism can slow down when you reduce your food intake, so this might be a possibility.

The other is that it's not been as bad as it seems in my head. The reality is that while there have been at least 3 evenings of pure gluttony I probably still don't eat as much as I did in the days before the change in lifestyle, and I've been almost angelic through the daytime.

Could it be a combination of metabolism and an over inflated sense of what I've eaten, or has the same God that allows war, death, famine, torture, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes and daytime soap operas taken time out of His busy schedule to allow me to eat a bit of extra chocolate and not pay the consequences?

Hmmm...

Starting Weight: 19st 9lb – 275lbs
Current Weight: 13st 1.2lb – 183.2lbs
Body fat: 24.0%
Total Weight Loss: 91.8lbs

I'm betting that what feels like gluttony to you now is nothing like what gluttony was to you a year ago. When your body is used to less, it takes less to overdo it. At least I'm finding that to be true in my case.

It's like the teetotaler who has a glass of champagne... since they rarely drink, it takes much less to get them drunk.

Hurray for .2!

Thanks for the post. You help me stay honest ( with myself). I recall that on the days I binged... to write still write out the points ( I do WW) jst so I could really see how bad it was. 9 times out of 10, my head was worse than what came out on paper. I am my own worst enemy.

Hi - I have found your blog very inspiring, and I in the middle of December I decided it was time to lose weight myself. I hope you dont mind but I have taken the idea of blogging this journey as I can really see the benifits of blogging in helping to retain focus. My blog will chart the journey where I hopefully can fit back into a pair of 32" trousers again(Returningto32.blogspot.com).
I am really just getting started, and I hope I manage to match some of your success. I just want to say thanks for the inspirtation you and this blog have givn me and good luck on the rest of your journey. Also how do you become involved in the Knights OTRB. Can anyone join? I feel being part of a community will help m to reach my goals, and one day I might be inspiring other. Thanks so much. Best wishes FR.

Sayre - you could be right, but I did still manage to pack away a fair amount

Sir Belly Jeans - we are all our own worst enemies. Some of our weight gain is because of bad eating habits, but an awful lot is the way we use food as an emotional crutch, comfort, and for self abuse.

This is why it is not just good enough to change your eating habits, you also have to look at the many reasons WHY you were overeating in the first place.

Lady Atkins - thank you :)

Fun Gal Ranger - at least I hope it's that and not Fungal Ranger - welcome to Losing a Hundredweight.

To join the Knights of the Round Bottoms, visit the FAQ page, find yourself a name and let Sir Chubalot know your intent, then let the rest of us know so that we can link to you.

I'll come over and take a look at your site just now

Thanks for continuing to visit my blog, Kim. I feel like we're both returning from a battle. You've been a more constant warrior than I've been and must heal yourself from your most recent wounds. I've let "the other side" have too many victories and must repair my weapons and re-evaluate my strategy. It is now 2007, a year that I regard as auspicious as you know. Onwards to victory for both of us.

As to your getting rid of .2 pounds, the words "normal fluctuation" and "statistically unimportant" apply (as I'm sure you know). The real deal is in the resumption of those habits that enabled you to get rid of the 90+ pounds in the first place. And to that I say,
onwards.....for both of us.

Oh one more things, your comment about a smoking festival in one of your recent posts amused me. (Though I wish I could give up smoking again - which I did over three decades ago. That was far easier.)

Hi Sir MB,
Thank you for your words of support on my blog. I have attempted to contact Lord Chubalot but he appears to be awol not posting since November. I am determined to win my battle, and to support others in their quests. The weeks seem so long at the moment as I eagerly await my next weigh-in. I have one question once you set out on the road of a knight of the Round Bottoms at what point do you become a lord? - Is it when you reach a BMI of 25 or a BMI of 22.5? I have read conflicting information about what my final target should be. Gl at your next weigh in.

Arlene - I would have been just as surprised if I'd only gained 0.2 lbs too. I know there's a bit of fluctuation, but not that should account for several pounds (as a man and not so subject to hormonal fluctuations anyway).

I gave up smoking myself about 16 1/2 years ago. Went through hell. Put on 30 lbs as I substituted snacks for cigarettes.

This year will pass anyway, whether we make the effort or not, so we may as well make the effort. In about 5 weeks I'll be reaching the 2nd anniversary since I started. If I hadn't done anything, not only would I not have lost over 90lbs, I'd have probably put on a further 30.

Weight-trimmer - You'll need to find a consistent name :)

I don't know how often Chubalot checks his emails or blog, but he should get round to it sooner or later.

Sort yourself out a name and add yourself on. If anyone asks, say I said it was OK.

The title "Lord" was decided to be adopted once people reached their goal weight. I don't think there's any hard and fast rules. My personal goals have changed as the journey has progressed.

When I started out, I thought that if I got down to 15stone (about 210lbs) I'd be happy. The title Losing a Hundredweight wasn't so much a goal as a joke about the impossiblity of the idea that I should have to lose 8 stone to get down to what was considered to be a "normal" weight. Of course for the Americans who visit, a hundredweight is 100lbs, rather than the 112lbs of the British, so I'm nearly a stone closer to that one.

At the moment I'd be happy to reach the 100lb mark. If I can get to 112 then I'd be overjoyed, but I'm not going to kill myself to get there. When you've been 8 stone overweight, a few pounds here or there seems much less important.

The driving force all along has been to be healthier, and that means eating good, healthy food rather than processed gunk.

My weight will settle where it will - in the end my battle is not with the weight, but with my cravings and eating habits.

I'll call myself "Lord Man Boobs" when I feel I've truly got it under control.

I'm glad to see that you weren't as bad as you thought you were. I'm with Sayre, I'm betting that you didnt eat nearly as much as you thought.
