Week 202

3lb gain.

Well that could have been so much worse! I was quite relieved it was ony 3lbs - I expected at least 4, possibly 5.

Still, this coming week will not be without damage either. There are still far too many temptations in the house, not to mention visits to friends and people coming over for meals.

Damage limitation still applies, and is helped by the fact Maggie already has a pot of healthy home made soup lined up for lunch today.

Wishing you all the best for the coming New Year Celebrations, and may your elasticated waistbands hold out :)

Week 201

0.8lb gain

So, this is where the Feastmas gains begin. However, I'm rather pleased it's still under a pound, given extra eating that that's been going on.

This is the essence of Damage Limitation - even though I'm going to indulge, at other times during the day/week my eating is on track and healthy.

One of the biggest mistakes most of us who attempt weight loss make, until we finally grasp what we're doing wrong, is thinking that once we've lost it, it's too late. So having blown it this week, I may as well carry on blowing it and start again next week. BUT NEXT WEEK WE'RE EVEN HEAVIER THAN WE NEEDED TO BE.

I've written a guest post for MizFit about Damage Limitation, which is being published on her site on 26th December, so do pop across and check it out. You might also want to add her to your favourites if you haven't come across her already :)

Have a good Feastmas and remember, if we put on 5lbs, it's an awful lot better than having put on 10lbs!

Week 200

2lb loss!

Woohoo! Just what I needed before Feastmas kicks in big time.

Over the next 7 days we'll be out for lunch 3 times, and then of course we'll be into the Christmas/New Year fortnight.

Still, at the moment I firmly have the idea of damage limitation in mind - indulge when it's really worth it, or cannot be avoided, but eat sensibly at every other opportunity. This way I may gain a few pounds, but not as many as if I just give in completely. I'd rather start January still comfortably under 190lbs than uncomfortably over.

Week 199

0.6lb loss!

This loss must have been the balance for last week's surprise rise. My son was baking all week for a cake & homebaking stall and there were quite a few left overs that were too hard to resist. I should probably have stayed even or put on up to half a pound, so I figure it must be quits with last week

Week 198

0.2lb gain.

While there appears to be a gain, I'm not worried about it. The fact is I've been on track all week, which is the greater achievement. I feel fairly certain this is just an anomaly and this will show in next week's stats.

So now we enter December, potentially one of the healthy eater's most dangerous months of the year.

Time for Damage Limitation!

This has been a good week. Very little in the way of extras. No evening snacking. I'm hoping the corner has been turned.

Week 195

0.4lb gain.

So back up to where I was a fortnight ago.

Mind you, it has been a pretty bad week emotionally and the worst of sins - snacking in the evening - has happened a couple of nights. That is one thing I have to get back under control.

At least it's a step in the right direction, if not as much as I'd hoped.

Still, helping a friend celebrate his birthday with one of my son's cakes on Saturday, was never going to be an effective weight loss strategy...

Week 193

3lb gain!

Over the past 7 days we've spent 3 days in a hotel with bed, breakfast and evening meal; 2 days travelling where food always goes awry; had my birthday party with a fantastic spread of food by Maggie; and eaten most of the leftovers of that fantastic spread of food by Maggie.

I'm now over a stone heavier than my lightest point in July last year.

If I don't turn this round now I am going to have to give up wearing 34" jeans, which are definitely too tight on me, and return to the 36's just to be able to breathe properly.

Fortunately we don't do Thanksgiving in Scotland so I think we have a more or less clear run until Feastmas.

0.6lb gain.

This post is 4 days late. The above gain was correct on Monday, but we were away for several days. My guess is this coming Monday will show a far greater increase as my birthday is on Saturday.

Week 191

0.8lb gain.

That's about fair I think, considering the extras that have sneaked in this past week.

I have to try and keep this coming week under control as best I can as next week I don't stand a chance. Next week we will be eating out several times AND it's my birthday at the end of it.

Is that good? Is that bad?

It all depends on which way my mood is swinging when I think about it.

One thing I do know is I'm bloody amazed we got through last night without a complete blow-out given various emotional stresses.

Heading back again...

I know I should probably be posting more about the excuses, the difficulties, the struggles etc, but just at the moment there really isn't much to say. I don't appear to be moving much in either direction. I was surprised I lost weight last week and surprised I gained it back this week.

When I have some insights, I'll post them. Meanwhile best of fortune on your own quests

Week 185

1lb loss!

Well that's a surprise!

Although I've been on track much of the week, there have been enough extras to prevent weight loss. So how come I've lost weight?

My only guess is that as I've had a pretty lousy few weeks, my metabolism has actually started to speed up a bit to compensate, which might also account for the lesser weight gain than expected last week.

I have noticed this effect before, but within a couple of weeks of being on track it starts to slow again, so cannot be used as a weight-loss tactic - the nett result is always a gain, just not quite as much gain as expected.

Week 184

0.6lb gain

Well frankly I'm astonished. I was fully expecting a gain of 3 to 4 pounds this week, given the chocolate, scones, cakes, cheese and ice cream I've devoured over the past 7 days.

Despite the last post, the positive effects of the chocolate only lasted a day. I've been struggling like mad since finding out my recent diagnosis of Haemochromatosis isn't likely to be the cause of my Fatigue.

I will get on top of this sooner or later, I know I will. But right now there are times when I couldn't give a shit if I go back up to 275lbs. And that's a dangerous place to be.

I know I shouldn't have, but...

.
(Imported from Ramblings of the Bearded One)

After the disappointment of yesterday, I gorged myself on far too much chocolate last night.

And felt considerably better for it.

Today I'm just generally a bit pissed off, rather than feeling that extreme void in chest, like my heart's been ripped out and dropped into the endless pit of despair.

For anyone out there who still thinks self medicating with food is just an excuse to be greedy, this is the bit you utterly fail to understand - chocolate works - at least temporarily.

Faced with the choice between emotional anguish, and a large bar of chocolate, there really isn't much competition. In that state you will completely ignore anyone saying, "Well, if you don't want to be overweight, just stop eating so much"

Unless they're covered in chocolate, that is.

In which case you'll be charged with cannibalism.

Week 183

1lb gain.

More birthdays. More cake. Treats tonight because kids go back to school tomorrow. Will it never end?

Because of my fatigue, and thus lack of activity, it takes little more than one weekly treat to help me put the weight on, and several exceptional weeks to take a bit off.

Sigh

Week 182

2lb gain

6 weeks to lose it, 2 days to put it back on. Damn this feels so unfair sometimes, although why I think there should be fairness involved after all these years is anyone's guess.

I'm afraid I have my daughter's Kitchen Exhibition to blame. Catering for guests is always a dodgy situation of vastly over supplying food and cakes, which means not only do we stuff ourselves silly, all the leftovers need to be used up the following day.

I have every intention of being back on track from today, but as my wife pointed out, this is the last full week of the kid's summer holidays so we'd better get round to taking them out and treating them.

Roll on September...

0.2lb loss!

I'm delighted with that.

What it means is a near faultless week has offset the excesses of Maggie's birthday last week, and that I was able to avoid the spiral out of control which so often accompanies a blow out.

So, a definite *SMUG* moment is called for this week.

Week 179

Same as last week

No loss, but no gain. Given the major, over-the-top indulgences yesterday because of my wife's birthday I can only conclude it hasn't had a chance to metabolise yet and will show up next week instead.

However, this gives me a bit of hope that if I can stay on track this week (minus the leftover birthday cake I know we'll have tonight) perhaps I can offset the damage and show no gain next week.

Alternatively it might send me into a craving spiral which will take a week to pull out of.

Still, better to think postive...

I think most of that is accountable from a week ago. That weekend of my son's baking, plus a few days of leftovers hadn't had the chance to make itself felt by the last weigh in.

However, since about Thursday I've been almost completely on track, so unless things go wrong this week , it should show in the next weigh-in

It's not rocket science - make the healthy choices and the weight naturally adjusts itself.

The trick is in overcoming the obstacles to making the healthy choices.

I am not surprised. What with Father's Day last Sunday, Rogan's birthday on Monday, left over cake on Tuesday, and I think a scone or two may well have worked its way into the mix this week as well, I'm now back over the 13 stone mark.

My only hope is it's just over a month until Maggie's birthday and I don't think there are any other celebrations meantime

Week 171

0.8lb loss!

I'm pleased, and relieved. There's no doubt I've had a couple of extra cookies this week, however, I have been incredibly restrained, given the temptations under my nose.

Saturday was the Food Town Day with various stalls flogging their wares on a closed off high street and I did succumb to the Hog Roast roll with all the trimmings, as I do every year. However, my son put up a stall to sell cakes, cookies and scones he'd baked.

And he has his mother's touch when it comes to baking.

They looked good, smelled fantastic and just made the mouth water.

Baking smells have been wafting through the house for days and plates and bowls of cake mix, cookie dough mix, chocolate icing, melted chocolate etc have been strewn around the kitchen just waiting for a finger to be dipped.

Fortunately he sold out by lunchtime. I know I wouldn't have been able to resist eating any leftovers.

Still, my restraint appears to have paid off with nearly a 1lb loss since last week.

However, there will be cake tonight as we celebrate the end of the Spring Fling Weekend where Maggie has been displaying her artwork in the Open Studio event.

Now I'm not entirely sure why I've put on over half a pound when I've had another near faultless week. I can only assume it's a blip of some kind, so I'm not going to worry myself over it.

More important is that I'm continuing to make the healthy choices, and there's no doubt it gets easier to resist the cravings the longer I go without giving into them.

I knew it was all going to fall apart on Friday when not only was I meeting a friend for lunch, but we were having a large family gathering and meal in the evening. Then Saturday was a day of struggling as the fallout from the day before made itself felt through massive cravings and a battered will that was unable to resist.

However I was on track for the other 5 days of the week, so the net gain of 1lb isn't too bad I guess. However, I am now 13lbs heavier than my lightest point over a year ago. This week I have high hopes for the real turnaround beginning.

Well clearly last weekend's indulgence has finally metabolised and caught up with me - I knew that 1lb loss was unlikely to stay there.

Quite frankly I'm stunned by this loss, and don't actually believe it.

Ah well, at least it's not a gain.

I would have thought that with the depression under control with the anti-depressants, that staying on track would have been a great deal easier. But it appears I was wrong.

As I've stated many times before the reasons for overeating are many and complex, and when we attribute them to a single cause we are blinding ourselves to all the others.

Because the depression has been the dominant theme for so long I'd almost forgotten all the other reasons at work.

Guess I have to start working on them again...

Maggie and I have had long discussions about her ability to bake mouthwateringly scrumptious scones, cakes and biscuits before now, and how they don't help keep the weight off.

However, what are you to do when she teaches the children how to bake and not only can you not refuse because, well, they're your children, but they have also inherited her incredible talents, so you cannot stop at one?

1.6lb gain.

Not the most auspicious start to my 4th year of healthy eating, and a reminder that this is a lifestyle, and never was a short-term diet.

This past year has essentially been one of maintenance. I am in fact about 4lbs heavier than I was 12 months ago, but given that it has been an extreme year emotionally, and my default reaction to stress is still to want to stuff my face, then not have put on more weight is actually quite an achievement.

The medical establishment has decided that the diagnosis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is the right one, which means upping my activity levels as a way of losing further weight is not a good idea. My energy has to be balanced and I have to avoid boom-and-bust style activity.

However, after 6 months of playing around with different kinds of anti-depressants at different dosages, my Depression is now finally under control. This doesn't mean I don't get stressed and don't what to stuff my face, only that I don't get walloped by extreme feelings out of the blue with no warning anymore, so that's one thing less to have to fight against.

One other thing that occured to me this morning was that my wife and I had taken our eyes off the future. When we set out on our quest, we had a clear vision of happier, healthier selves to focus on and help us fight some of the worst cravings.

But with various crises this year, especially the CFS, we have been treading water where the future is concerned. To mix analogies, we have been constantly firefighting and have had precious little time to look at the direction we wanted to go.

The upshot of this is when faced with, say, a buttery scone, the reaction has been "Do I have this scone or not? - I feel lousy, I really want it so I'm going to have it" rather than "Do I have this scone and satisfy a short term desire, or not have it and so take a further step towards a happier, healthier future?"

When stuck in the present, long term goals and aspirations fail to be any part of your armoury.

Of course I was most of the way through a buttery scone (with jam) in the cafe with my wife when I this occured to me...

Still, it was a valuable insight.

Here's to a happier, healthier future. Let's celebrate by not having a cake :)

Week 156

0.6lb gain

Well it was my stepdaughter's birthday on Wednesday, and the anniversary of my mother's death on Friday so the eating was a little haywire.

It's my daughter's 10th birthday this Thursday so I daresay I won't be losing anything this week either.

Still, could have been worse.

Week 155

0.4lb loss

Same again.

It is gratifying to know that when I stay on track the weight comes off. This means that if things go awry with pancake day tomorrow, my step-daughter's birthday on Wednesday and my daughter's birthday next week, it's not the end of the world.

And given that the rest of the time should be more or less OK, everything feels under control.

Which is an enjoyable, if rare, feeling.

And I'd also like to say Welcome Back Sir Squishy :)

Week 154

0.4lb loss

Still heading in the right direction, if not quite as quickly as hoped. However, given the lack of activity these days I'm quite happy for any losses I get.

0.8lb loss

I might have hoped for a touch more, but I'm not going to complain. I've had a good week with only a couple of minor indulgences. Here's hoping we're back on track properly now.

Week 152

0.2lb loss

At least I've stopped increasing in size.

Last week I was full of good resolve, but there turned out to be a few more previously undiscovered Feastmas goodies hidden at the back of the cupboard.

In addition, Maggie produced some incredible white chocolate, cranberry and pumkin seed oat biscuits (cookies) in a sudden bout of comfort baking, which were too good to ignore.

All in all I'm just happy not to have gained.

Week 151

2.2lb gain

That's me back over the 13 stone mark by 0.4lbs, which means I'm roughly half a stone heavier than a month ago.

However, I'd swear I’ve eaten more this past week than I did in the week surrounding Feastmas.

You see apart from Feastmas Day itself, I was actually a bit conscious of what I was eating. Sure I was eating too much of the tasty stuff but I would, on occasion, hold back a bit.

But this week we have a fridge, 2 freezers and several cupboards full of goodies that didn’t get eaten because we didn’t have 40,000 people over for Christmas Dinner.

Of course we can’t possibly let that food go to waste, but we also know it will be a major temptation so long as it remains. Therefore, the logic goes, the sooner we’ve eaten it all, the sooner we can get back to a healthier lifestyle.

I know there’s a flaw in the logic somewhere, but the drive not to throw out good food overrides all other considerations.

Contrary to the old cliché, you can in fact have too much of a good thing.

However, I'm not going to beat myself up about this. I know that our healthy eating system works. Unless there's another major crisis (or 6) then we should be able to get back on top of this, as we have for nearly 3 years now.
