Week 306

2.4lb gain

Could have been worse.

The fightback begins today, but experience has shown that after a couple of days of over indulgence, it's like back to square one with resisting the cravings. The yearning ache for sweet fatty foods goes through the roof and it can take up to 3 weeks of being strictly on track before they calm down again.

Trying to combat the cravings while there are still sweet fatty foods in the house makes the problem 10 times worse.

At least what I do have on my side after nearly 6 years of doing this, is experience and recognition of all the symptoms. Even when I'm losing the battle, at least I know why and can still slip in a few damage-limitation measures.

I know, for example, that deciding to give up until the holiday season is over means I would have an extra 10lbs to lose come January.

I know that each sensible meal, or healthy snack I have is still worth it.

Accumulatively, if I come out of this weighing 180lbs instead of 190, then it is still a good thing and worth trying to achieve.

Week 305

1.8lb gain.

And so it begins...

I had hoped to stay on track a bit better this week before Feastmas, but some of the temptations were just a little too, er, tempting

Week 304

No change.

Considering there have been at least a couple of mince pies and one or 2 other pre-festive treats, I think I'm quite happy to have stayed the same and not gained this week.

Week 303

2.2lb loss!

I'm happy with that. On track all week and it's wiped out the gain from last week.

Week 302

2.2lb gain

Disappointing, but unsurprising. We had a gathering at the weekend, for which Maggie was cooking and baking pretty much all week long. So quite apart from the actual evening itself, there was all the tasting before hand and all the leftovers the following day - and these included some of the scrummiest cakes known to mankind.

I never stood a chance...

A little disappointing, but at least I haven't put any on this week

Week 300

0.6lb loss.

Week 300.

Few people are still going with weight-loss blogs this long - either because they've achieved their goals or have given up completely. So why am I still going?

The thing is, I think there's a good chance this is a lifelong thing for me. I don't think I will ever actually get to a point where food is no longer an issue for me. It will always be a struggle on some level or another, so my weight is always likely to bob up and down a bit, depending on my state of mental health.

The function of this blog has always been for me to write down my weight each week so I can either feel a sense of accomplishment if I've lost weight, or have to make a public excuse if I've put it on.

For the foreseeable future I don't see that changing.

Week 299

0.6lb loss.

Heading back in the right direction.

It's been a near perfect week, although at the moment I'm eating more oatcakes as a way of staving off cravings.

Thin rough oatmeal oatcakes, dry (no toppings) have a crunch and chew value to them without too much in the way of calorific excess. Slightly tastier than cardboard and they don't trigger food binges.

1.2lb gain

Well no surprises there given it was my birthday last week, and I did indulge.

Hopefully should be back on track this week

Week 297

1.8lb loss!

Solidly back on track for a week and the payoff is immediately noticable.

However, as it was my birthday today (Monday), which consisted of a fair amount of over indulgence, I doubt I'll be looking at a loss next week, even if I stay on track for the next 6 days...

Week 296

3lb gain

Away on holiday last week, which is why there was no update and the weight gain is pretty hefty.

It could have been a lot worse - at least I'm still under 12 stone - but it was enough to mean the cravings are strong again, and are likely to be for the next couple of weeks until I get used to not having sweet things again.

Week 294

1lb gain

Strictly speaking it was a 1.8lb gain followed by a 0.8lb loss, but I didn't get round to posting the stats last week due to all sorts of family matters going on.

I won't be posting next week either, but should be resuming normal service in 2 weeks.

Week 292

1.4lb loss!

Well that's a relief. After 2 weeks of gains, there is always the fear that perhaps I'd reached the limit of how low I was going to go. Fortunately being back on track properly has meant I've started heading in the right direction again.

 0.6lb gain

Well, I know exactly where that's come from - 2 rock buns and 3 homemade custard cream biscuits.

Maggie was comfort baking -something she's known to do under times of stress. Needless to say it's a psychological war zone, and we never come out unscathed.

I am aware of little extras creeping in across the week. Need to be properly back on track again

Week 289

1.6lb loss!

Very happy with that. I've been on track all week,  but I'm still surprised when I lose anything more than about half a pound.

I'm now only 0.2 of a pound short from losing  112lbs, or in British Currency 8 stone - which is a British hundredweight - something I never actually believed I would ever reach.

Week 288

0.2lb gain

I can live with that. There have been a handful of extras which meant I knew I was unlikely to lose anything this week. However, what this does mean is it consolidates the large loss last week, which I was concerned might have just been a blip.

Should be completely back on track this week.

Week 287 - 50kg

2.4lb loss!

Although I've been back on track all week, I wasn't expecting a loss of this magnitude, so I'll have to see next week whether it's sustained or is a blip.

However, dropping under 11st 11lbs, or 165lbs means I've hit the 50kg marker.

During the winter, the coalman delivers bags of coal weighing 50kg, and I can barely pick them up for more than a few seconds, and I need my son to help me decant it into smaller bags.

It now seems mindboggling that 5½ years ago I was carrying that amount extra on me every day.

Week 286

0.4lb & 0.8lb gains

The past couple of weeks has included 2 trips away for 2-3 days at a time, as well as excessive tiredness and illness, resulting in precious little physical activity.

The upshot is gains (as well as a missed blog update), but cruicially (for my own self esteem at least) I'm still under 12 stone. And everything should be back on track, as from this morning.

Week 284

0.2lb gain

Although it's a gain, I'm delighted with it.

Last week it was my wife's birthday, so in addition to a huge slice of chocolate cake, we'd also had ice cream earlier in the day when we went out for a picnic, and popcorn in the evening when we went to the cinema to see Toy Story 3.

Consequently I had fears of putting on a pound or more. So to have only gained 0.2 of a pound is a good result in my book.

Week 283

0.6lb loss!

Still heading in the right direction. After the larger losses of the previous couple of weeks I wasn't expecting much, so to still lose over half a pound feels good.

Week 282

1.4lb loss!

Well that was a surprise. I'm still doing what I've been doing every week so given the 1.4lb loss last week, I wasn't expecting the same level of drop this time.

So this puts me in sight of losing 8 stone - only 3.2lbs away from that figure - and 8 stone is 112lbs which is a hundredweight in British measurements, not the US 100lbs.

I never expected to get down this far

Week 281 - under 12 stone

1.4lb loss!

Not only is that a good amount to lose in a week, but highly significant for me is it takes me under 12 stone.

For those who measure purely in pounds or kilos, I know stones are an odd scale. 1 stone = 14 pounds. Don't ask me - I didn't invent it, I just grew up with it.

However, because I grew up with it, each time I cross a stone it has much larger significance than crossing, say a 10lb or even a 10kg marker.

But to have reached a point where there is an 11 in front almost makes me weep, for it puts me in the realm of the weight I was as a young man, before I started gaining.

As well as being the upper limit of the "normal" range for my height, according to the BMI charts, 11st 4lbs is the weight I have in my head as what I was around the ages of 19 to 21 years old. I am now 11st 13.6lbs.

I do not expect to get down to 11st 4lbs, but to be within the same "stone" almost makes me dizzy.

Week 280

1lb loss!

Phew! After last week's unexpected gain I had a moment of fear that it was going to unravel. However, it was just a blip and if I'd lost 0.4lbs last week and another 0.4lbs this week then I would have ended up in the same place and felt quite content.

Week 279

0.2lb gain :(

OK, I know 0.2lbs is little more than the weight of a good fart, but unfortunately it breaks the 15 week run I was whooping with joy about last week.

I really cannot think of anything I have done differently this week, so I'll just have to put it down to a blip and hope I continue in the right direction next week

Week 278 - under 170lbs

1.6lb loss!

This is a bigger loss than expected, but then the thing is always to look at the trend in preference to the individual weeks.

And the trend is, over the past 10 weeks I've lost 9.2lbs. But the main thing is I've been consistently losing something every week for 15 weeks in a row, and that accumulates.

My 34" jeans are no longer tight and my baggy shirts are becoming rather ridiculously large.

At some point I am going to have to go out and buy some clothes that actually fit, rather than drape. But to be honest, I have no idea where to begin.

As I got larger, my clothes choice was dictated by what I could buy that was large enough to fit. And as I've been coming down, other than jeans and underwear, I've carried on wearing the same clothes.

I still haven't really accepted the idea that I can in fact walk into any high street shop now and find clothes that fit. But I've never been a fashionista, so actually have no idea what would suit me.

Week 277

0.4lb loss

Although I still have at least 13lbs to lose before I would stop being "overweight" and into the "normal" range, at this stage, every loss feels like an unexpected bonus.

Last time I was below 175lbs I just considered myself in maintenance mode, but I'm begining to think a couple more pounds loss is still likely

Week 276 - a new record low

I don't know what happened to last week's stats - clearly I forgot to write in week 275 and my 0.4lb loss that week.

However, the big news is this week I have lost 1.6lb. And this is highly significant for me

By taking me down to 12st 3.8lb or 171.8lb, it now means I'm the lightest I've been since I was in my early 20s.

My previous lowest point was back in July 2007 when for one week only, I was 12st 4.2lbs, or 172.2lbs. Then I bobbed back and forth around the 12st 7lb mark (which was the 100lb down point from my original starting point) for several months until Christmas, where I put on a few more pounds, never really lost them and a very slow creep back began.

By September last year I had risen above 14 stone to 197.6lbs and that was the point we managed to begin turning it round again.

In fact, if you scroll to the bottom of the page you can see quite visually the changes on the trackngraph.com chart

So I am now the lightest my wife has ever known me - I was around 185lbs when we first met, nearly 20 years ago.

0.2lb loss

Ah well - 0.2lbs is hardly going to make me make another notch on my belt. However, last week's 1.6lb loss was higher than expected, so this probably evens it out.

And it means that's now 11 consecutive weeks of loss

Week 272 - 100lb loss... revisited

1.6lb loss!

Well, if that wasn't a good loss in itself, it takes me down to a fraction under 12½ stone, which means I have once again reached that 100lbs marker from my original starting point just over 5 years ago.

OK, I first reached this marker 3 years ago (week 110), but I don't think that invalidates the whole thing.

The reality is between 95% and 98% of all people who go on a diet, put all the weight back on within 2 to 3 years. And most of them actually end up heavier than when they started.

Although my weight did start creeping back up, across 2½ years, I put on no more than 23lbs and have now taken that off again.

And it's all about focusing on eating healthily - not on dieting.

Weight loss is a side effect of being healthier, and as such it's sustainable and doesn't get you adopting stupid, dangerous eating patterns just to lose the pounds

The battleground is then not with the food, but with how we deal with why we overeat, and how we use food to cope with high emotional states.

Focus on eating healthily. It really is the best way

Week 271

0.8lb loss!

Because of the way this eating style works, I cannot have anything with sugar in it as the yeast in the gut, having been deprived of it for several weeks now, would go mad and explode in growth if I do before it's all died back.

So I can't even lick the jam spoon, pick the cheese off the pizza tray or any one of a hundred other little nibbly things you do without realising.

But while it is, without doubt, frustrating at times, it does mean the weight is continuing to drop

Week 269

0.4lb loss

Not sure why the drop was less - it was another faultless week, but then some weeks I've dropped more than expected, so it all evens out in the end.

This means I've had 7 successive weeks of weightloss, and that 100lb mark that I originally reached 3 years ago, is getting closer once again

Week 268

2lb loss!

Another faultless week, and that 2lb loss takes me back under 180lbs, and the 6th successive week of weightloss

I first reached this figure back in November 2006 (having started 96 pounds heavier in February 2005). The last time I was at this weight was December 2007, although I came close in summer 2008.

But there is something nice about being comfortably back in the 12 stone something range. And as I have to give this way of eating a proper chance to see if it will help combat the CFS, there's no reason why things should change over the next few weeks at least.

And I have had no chocolate this Easter. None. Not a single cream egg. First time ever, I think.

Anyone got a medal for me...?

1.8lb loss.

A faultless week - even a complete week with no sugar in my coffee. It's mildly less vile, but at this rate it could be August before I get used to sugarless coffee.

Significant figures: I'm back under 13stone for the first time since August 2008.

I also realised the 36" waist jeans are definitely too baggy now, so am back in the 34"s - slightly snug, but bearable.

Week 266

0.6lb loss

Not as much as last week, although it is still in a downward direction, so it wasn't just a blip.

A faultless week this week and I've even cut sugar out of my coffee the past few days. At the moment it still tastes like vile poison, but I'm hoping my tastebuds will get used to it soon.

At some point soon I will cut out the coffee too. Then, hopefully I will have removed all up-and-drop habits from my life, but I'm not ready just yet.

With the CFS I miss that feeling awake, feeling alive that I only get now for 45 minutes or so after my 2 coffees a day. My hope is once the caffeine is completely out my system my body will naturally adjust so I won't just feel knackered the entire day.

But to be honest, I'm quite fearful - what if it means I don't ever feel properly awake or alive again?

Week 265 - 3lb loss and a visit to the Nutritionist

3lb loss!

In the past 5 years I think I've only twice ever lost 3lbs in one week, so this was a bit of a surprise.

But I have been on track and then some, this week.

Last Thursday I went to see a Nutritionist who, after looking through the detailed questionnaire I'd filled out and testing me on her machine, told me I most likely had a couple of mild food intolerances and too much yeast in my system which affects my digestion and ability to absorb the right nutrients, thus either causing, or contributing to my CFS.

The upshot of this is it has been recommended I cut out sugars, yeast and fungi from my diet - this includes fruit juice, dried fruits and many fresh fruits too, as they are all high in sugar content - and take pro-biotics and Chromium supplements to allow my body to recover. She didn't think I had full blown Candida, but felt I was leaning that way so should look to address it.

I don't appear to have a wheat intolerance, but can't have bread because of the yeast. And it turns out the fungi thing means I can't have Quorn either, which is a bit of a bugger as we lead a largely vegetarian diet and Quorn usually features once or twice a week.

It seems mostly I'll be following a GL diet, which Maggie had been looking at anyway.

Am I certain this is all correct and not bullshit? No. You don't need a medical degree to call yourself a nutritionist, and the vega machine she used to test me for my reactions to different food stuffs hasn't had full clinical trials.

However, I'm prepared to give it a go. It looks a few stages more advanced than Crystal Therapy, and I'm not being recommended to do anything unhealthy or life threatening. If it turns out to be complete bollocks, then at least I won't have lost anything.

What this has meant is I now daren't snack on anything I shouldn't. It's no longer just a case of extra calories delaying or preventing weight loss, but the wrong things can feed the yeast growth. And if I'm to give this a shot then I've got to do it properly, otherwise I'll never know.

I've not given up my 2 coffees a day yet, but I fear it's only a matter of time...

1lb loss!

That's good. Was on track all week, with the exception of a tub of popcorn at the cinema on Saturday when Maggie and I went to see the new Alice in Wonderland movie (visually lovely, but lacking any real dramatic tension).

No matter how many advances I've made in other areas of my life, I cannot go to the cinema without having a tub of popcorn. I would be completely unable to enjoy the film, spending the entire time missing the popcorn.

Fortunately we very rarely go to the cinema

 0.4lb loss

Back in the right direction again.

Forgot to mention last week it was the 5th Anniversary since I began the journey of heathly eating. I still haven't figured out whether that's a good or a bad thing...

Week 262

1.8lb gain

To be honest, that could have been worse. This past week has seen my daughter's birthday celebrations, a trip to see my stepdaughter and her children and a weekend away with my wife, including trips to cafes.

I'm actually craving vegetables.

Well, nearly...

Week 261

0.8lb loss!

I'm very pleased with that, although somewhat surprised as there have been a few little extras this week.

However, for anyone who doesn't know, one of the greatest achievements in the world of bloggers dealing with health and weight issues has been Kepa, or Fat Lazy Guy, reaching his target of being under 100kg, or 220lbs.

What makes this such an astonishing success story is 3 years ago he weighed over 500lbs.

And what makes this so special for me is we've been exchanging blog comments since he started. If you like, I knew him back in his days of struggle and massive self-esteem issues, long before the bold and confident guy he is today.

So this isn't about some distant person who must be superhuman and I couldn't relate to. This is very real.

Here's a wee video he made charting his success

.

It almost brings a tear to my eye

Here's a link to his post

Week 260

1.4lb loss

So my unexpected gain last week must have been a blip as I've dropped down below my weight from 2 weeks ago.

I'm happy with that :)

Starting Weight: 19st 9lb - 275lbs
Current Weight: 13st 4.8lb - 186.8lbs
Body fat: 26.2%
Total Weight Loss: 88.2lbs

Week 259

0.8lb gain?

Sigh

Don't really know what's caused this. I know I did have a couple of little extras this week - a scone on Wednesday, and a cup of hot chocolate on Friday, but these shouldn't have been enough to cause a weight gain.

It's not so bad when I can see what I've done wrong, but this is disappointing

Starting Weight: 19st 9lb - 275lbs
Current Weight: 13st 6.2lb - 188.2lbs
Body fat: 26.4%
Total Weight Loss: 86.8lbs

Week 258

Another 1.4lb loss!

A near faultless week again, but I'm surprised to lose over a pound again.

Due to the CFS my activity levels aren't that wonderful, so realistically I don't feel I can expect to lose much over 1/2 a pound per week

So I'm happy with that :)

Current Weight: 13st 5.4lb - 187.4lbs
Body fat: 26.2%
Total Weight Loss: 87.6lbs

Week 257

1.4lb loss!

Another good week almost completely on track. This takes me down below my pre-Christmas weight, which by the middle of January is something virtually unheard of.

Mind you, the most astonishing weight-loss marker I've been hit with is Kepa, over at Fat Lazy Guy, has now reached a point where he has lost 277lbs since he started.

The reason the figure leaps out at me is that it is more than I weighed at my heaviest - which was 275lbs.

If you strapped me at my most obese to the back of Kepa as he is now, combined we would still weigh less than when he began his journey.

I am so impressed with this guy.

Starting Weight: 19st 9lb - 275lbs
Current Weight: 13st 6.8lb - 188.8lbs
Body fat: 26.6%
Total Weight Loss: 86.2lbs

Week 256

1.2lb loss!

I'm pleased with that. Surprisingly, given all the snow and ice, I've actually been out and about more than usual this past week. With the camera. And I'm sure that's helped burn off a couple of extra calories along with the fact I've had a virtually faultless week.

For anyone interested in some of the photos I took, pop over to my main blog, Ramblings of the Bearded One and take a look at this post:

Week 255

0.2lb gain

This means my entire Feastmas gain has been less than 2lbs!

WOOHOO!!!

Without doubt this will have been the least amount gained over a Christmas period at any point in my life.

And it's not like we didn't let ourselves enjoy our food and go for it over Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. But we contained it within those days.

Sure we had a few little extras over other days, but we contained them to either a little something with the morning coffee, or an addition to dinner.

What we didn't do (except on Hogmanay) was eat in the evenings in front of the TV, and snack in between meals. And of course, the core diet was still healthy.

It took a lot of planning and resolution on the run up to the Gluttenous Season, but it's paid off.

And we're right back on track again.

I'm going to allow myself a rather large *smug* moment...
